MM Fine Arts Form #4

This is the Graduation Application for MM students and is signed by the student's entire supervisory committee. The Graduate Secretary mails this form to the student. Please note that all incomplete grades must be taken care of before you sign a student's Form #4.

Final Recitals/Final Oral Defense

Please encourage your students who are graduating to schedule their final recitals and oral exams. Grad students can schedule recitals 3 months in advance and the date must be finalized no less than 6 weeks in advance. The orals must take place within a week after the recital. No recitals or oral exams may take place after the last day of classes of the semester. Students with "I" grades are not allowed to do the final recital and oral exam. Dean's reps are no longer required, but the exam must be "open to the public" and in a "neutral location," in other words, not in your office.

Admissions FAQ

Q. Do non-matriculated students have to reapply to the University when they are ready to enter a degree program? A. Yes, they must complete the online Admissions Application and pay the fee.

Q. Do Master's students have to reapply to the University when they are continuing directly (without a break) into the Ph.D. or the DMA? A. They must apply to the School of Music by submitting a letter of intent, resume, repertoire list, and three letters of recommendation to the Graduate Secretary. They do not have to do the online Admissions application.

Q. What should I tell a student who is taking a leave of absence? A. Student must submit a Leave of Absence form at least 2 weeks before the end of the semester, withdraw from all classes, and be sure to check into the implications for their financial aid. DMA Information

Related Fields for the DMA: All DMA students are to choose a related field of study. This happens after a student is admitted to the DMA program, usually during the first semester of study. The student must file formal application for admission into the chosen Related Field, following the requirements below.
Related Field Admission.pdf

DMA Qualifying Exam/Oral Defense Information: The written qualifying exams in the major field are compiled by the committee chair with questions submitted from the rest of the committee. The topics are taken from the student's course work and "major-specific" materials that a DMA candidate should know. Related field questions are prepared by the Related Area faculty representative on the committee (other faculty in the Related Area may be consulted as well.) Qualifying exams in the major and related field should be taken the semester before the semester of graduation (in the fall for spring graduation). The "Report of the Qualifying Exam" is the graduation application for DMA (and Ph.D) students.

The oral defense takes place after the lecture recital, paper and written exams. The format is to serve as a defense of the paper/project, and also to provide clarification or answer lingering questions left over from the qualifying exams.

General Information: All Degree Programs

Paperwork Deadlines and Checklists: these can be found in section III of the School of Music Graduate Student Handbook. All paperwork must be submitted to the School of Music Graduate Secretary, NOT directly to the Graduate School.

Continuous Registration Policy: Graduate School policy requires that all graduate students be registered continuously from the time of formal admission through completion of ALL requirements for the degree, (except summer semesters). After the oral defense is complete, registration is no longer required provided that all other degree requirements are complete. Minimum registration consists of a minimum of three semester credit hours of course work, individual research (6910), thesis research (6970), project hours (6975 or 6976), or faculty consultation (6980).Students who are unable to maintain continuous registration should apply for a formal leave of absence.
