He spent two summers at the Mozarteum in Salzburg as a student of the Italian pianist Carlo Zecchi. He continued his piano studies at the Ohio State University, which conferred on him the degrees of Master of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts. He is also a Licentiate in accompanying of London’s Royal Academy of Music, and a Licentiate of Trinity College of Music in piano pedagogy.

Dorgan has performed as both soloist and accompanist on tour throughout Ireland and has appeared on Irish radio and television.   He has accompanied singers in recitals in Switzerland and Italy; in London, Paris, and Toronto; at the Puccini Festival in Viareggio, and in the United States. In Salt Lake City, where he now resides, Dorgan has frequently performed as concerto soloist, chamber musician and accompanist on the Temple Square Recital Series; with the NOVA Chamber Music Series; with OPUS Chamber Orchestra; and on the University of Utah’s Virtuoso Series, as well as its Sundays@7 Series.

While still in Ireland, Paul Dorgan was associated with the Irish National Opera, and he has continued his operatic associations in America.    For seven years he was on the music staff of Cincinnati Opera, and spent two years with Virginia Opera. In 1992 he became Principal Coach at Utah Opera, where he oversaw the establishment of the Young Artist, and Studio Artist programs, and instituted “Preludes”, a series of pre-performance talks. Other companies he has worked with include L’Opéra du Montréal, Opera Columbus, Atlanta Opera and Opera Memphis. In the spring of 2001 he was invited by Anton Coppola to assist in the world premiere of his opera Sacco and Vanzetti with Opera Tampa, and he has returned as Maestro Coppola’s assistant in each of the subsequent seasons.

Paul Dorgan has published numerous articles on operatic subjects, and many opera companies use his supertitle translations. He has adjudicated for the Metropolitan Opera Auditions and for NATS, and he lectures and presents master classes for singers and accompanists throughout the United States.

In 2006 he was invited to join the faculty at the Summer Academy of the Bern Opera Studio in Biel, Switzerland; the following year he coached singers and pianists at the University of Toronto’s COSI program in Sulmona, Italy.

Currently Dr. Dorgan is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Music at the University of Utah where he teaches classes and coaches singers and pianists.
