Dr. Ning Lu was born in China, and made his professional debut and first recording at the age of nine. Overwhelmingly acclaimed, he was accepted to study piano at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where he won the first prize in piano competition of the Central Conservatory of Music. He received his B.M. and M.M. from the University of Utah, and DMA in piano performance from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Since his debut with orchestra at age of twelve with the Central Conservatory of Music Philharmonic, Dr. Lu has performed with the Youth Symphony of China, University of Utah Philharmonia, Midland-Odessa Symphony Orchestra, and Valley Symphony and Choral in McAllen, TX. As the 1990 Grand Prizewinner of SummerArts Piano Competition, he was awarded a concerto engagement to perform with the Utah Symphony. His most recent performance of the Mozart Piano concerto K 466 with the University of Utah School Music Faculty Soloists was praised as “More highly charged and dramatic reading of the concerto, … stormy passion and romantic intensity to his interpretation.”(Deseret Morning News, Tuesday, April 4, 2006). In the same year, Dr. Lu has also performed Mozart Piano concerto K 467 with the Valley Symphony and Choral in Texas. The local newspaper The Monitor wrote, “his concentration on virtuosity engendered a tension that restrained the fullest expression of the passages. Even with that subtle limitation, the andante inspired a wonderful change of mood, enhanced by Lu’s brilliant technique.”(Oct 13, 2006)
Dr. Lu has also won numerous prestigious awards from international and national piano competitions both in China and U.S. His prizes include the First Prize of the National Piano Competition in China, both the 1st Annual Piano Competition and Piano Etude Competition of the Central Conservatory of Music, the Audition of Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in China, the Utah State Fair piano competition, the 1992 International Tourgee-Debose Piano Competition in Louisiana, The 29th National Young Artist Competition in Midland-Odessa, Texas, and the Second Prize at the Isabel Scionti Piano Competition at the Kingsville International Young Performer's Competition, and Graduate Music Competition at the University of Colorado at Boulder. In 1996, as the Grand Prize winner of the 2nd Annual Audio-Video Recording International Piano Competition in New York City, Mr. Lu gave his first solo piano recital in the Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall.
Being an active performer and clinician, Dr. Lu has presented piano solo recitals, collaborative concerts, and master classes at University of Texas at San Antonio, University of Texas Pan American, Duke University.University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, the Senzoko Gaken College of Music in Japan, the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and Normal University of Nanjing in China. He has also presented piano recitals in U.K., Germany, Switzerland, Scotland, and Israel. He has also been invited to perform in many international music festivals including The Lake Konstanz International Music Festival in Germany, the 24th Annual International Workshop in Glasgow, Scotland, The Colorado Music Festival. In June 2007, Dr, Lu and his wife and piano duo partner, Dr. Jie Lu performed for the 2007 Gina Bachauer International Music Festival at the Rose Wagner Hall in Salt Lake City. In December 2007, Dr. Lu was invited artist for the 6th National Golden Bell Music Festival and performed in the prestigious Xian Xing Hai Music Hall in Guangzhou, China.
Dr. Lu has served the adjudicator of preliminary round in The 2002 Gina Bachauer International Artist Piano Competition, and 2004 Gina Bachauer International Junior Piano Competition as well as the jury member of 2003 First Gina Bachauer International Amateur Piano Competition.
Dr. Ning Lu is listed in Marquis Who’s Who in America, 59th and 60th Edition, and was awarded the Steinway Artist in 2005 at the New York City. He is recording artist for NAXOS International Label. His CD Ma Sicong, Violin and Piano Works, Vol. 1 was released in 2007 worldwide.
