Larry Zalkind, Principal Trombone for the Utah Symphony, began his trombone studies at the age of eight and at age twelve entered the California Institute of the Arts Youth Program. He won the Saunderson Award at the Coleman Chamber Music Competition in 1976. In 1980 he accepted a Teaching Assistantship to do doctorate work at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Since 1990, he has toured and performed extensively as a member of the Summit Brass playing trombone and euphonium. In addition, he has performed with Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, Oregon; Music of the Baroque in Chicago; the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder; the Grand Teton Music Festival in Jackson Wyoming; and with the Elkhorn Music Festival in Sun Valley, Idaho. He has performed and recorded with the Chicago, Atlanta, and St. Louis symphonies. He has been featured as soloist with the Fairbanks Symphony, The Southwest Symphony, The West Los Angeles Symphony, The New Sousa Band, the Burbank (California) Chamber Orchestra, the Billings Symphony, the Twin Falls Symphony, and the Central Oregon Symphony.

As Principal Trombonist of the Utah Symphony since 1981, Zalkind often appears as soloist. He performed the world premiere of Henry Wolking's Concerto for Trombone. He is a founding member of the Utah Symphony Brass Quintet and has performed extensively throughout Utah. In 1996 he was a clinician and recitalist at the 76+4 Trombone Workshop at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas and in 1998 at the International Trombone Association Festival at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Zalkind has also served as clinician at The International Tuba-Euphonium Conference at the University of Minnesota and at Northwestern University. He has been a guest performer and clinician at the University of Southern California, Northwestern University, Rice University, and University of Akron, among many others. He has served on the faculty of the Marrowstone Music Festival in Port Townsend, Washington, the Batiquitos Festival of the Arts in San Diego, and the Grand Teton Orchestral Seminar in Wyoming. He has also held faculty positions at Cerritos College in California, Albion College in Michigan, and Weber State College in Utah. He served on the faculty of the Idlewild School of Music and the Arts from 1976-78, and the USC Community Schools from 1977-1979.

Zalkind's wife, Roberta, is the Associate Principal Violist of the Utah Symphony viola section. They have three children: Benjamin, Matthew, and Aaron.
