Mezzo-Soprano Kirsten Gunlogson enjoys a versatile career including opera, chamber music, concert and oratorio performing. Her voice has been described as “rich”, “creamy” and “beautifully dramatic”. Known for her convincing interpretation of trouser roles and charmingly feminine portrayals Ms. Gunlogson has distinguished herself as an impressive singing actress. Ms. Gunlogson has performed with Michigan Opera Theatre, Indianapolis Opera, Palm Beach Opera, Tulsa Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Toledo Opera, Nashville Opera, Kentucky Opera, Sarasota Opera, Fresno Grand Opera, Pine Mountain Music Festival, and the AshLawn-Highland Summer Festival. Some of these roles have included Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro, Dorabella in Così fan Tutte, Hansel in Hansel and Gretel, Meg Page in Falstaff, Prince Orlovsky in Die Fledermaus, Olga in Eugene Onegin, Siebel in Faust, and the role of Dinah in Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti.


Recently Ms. Gunlogson made her debut with Utah Symphony and Opera as Tessa in The Gondoliers as well as the alto soloist in Mozart's Vesperae solennes de Confessore. The 2007-08 season and beyond will bring a debut with Arizona Opera as Zweite Dame in Die Zauberflote, a Valentines Day Gala of Rodgers and Hammerstein with Mobile Opera, performances as Nicklause in Les Contes d'Hoffman with Indianapolis Opera, and a debut with Austin Lyric Opera as Maddalena in Rigoletto.

 

Recognized for her ability to convey both emotion and text, Ms. Gunlogson is in high demand as a concert artist. She has performed as an oratorio soloist with The Nashville Symphony, The Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, The Fort Wayne Philharmonic, The Johnstown Symphony, The Pittsburgh Concert Chorale, Charlottesville Oratorio Society, The Ma’alwyck Sinfonia and The Fairfax Symphony in such works as Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Mass in C and Missa Solemnis, Bach’s St. John Passion and Christmas Oratorio, The Messiah, and The Rachmaninoff Vespers. The Pittsburgh Tribune praised her performance in Beethoven’s Mass is C by saying, “Kirsten Gunlogson has a beautifully placed mezzo-soprano voice that is rich without ever being heavy, and was outstanding in several extended solos and in the ensemble.” Ms. Gunlogson recently performed at Carnegie Hall as the alto soloist in Mozart Vesperae solennes de Confessore and Haydn's Theresienmesse.



Active as a recitalist, Ms. Gunlogson is a proud member of the chamber trio Northern Accord. The other members of the group include clarinetist, Elizabeth Gunlogson and pianist, Eileen Cornett. Northern Accord performs both well-loved classics and little-known contemporary pieces composed for its distinctive instrumentation. With the mission of offering high-caliber music that is accessible and enjoyable, Northern Accord constantly challenges itself to unearth pieces that will suit its spirited, quirky and personable nature. Northern Accord performs regularly on concert series and college campuses throughout the United States including The Peabody Conservatory, University of Utah, Brigham Young University, and University of New Hampshire. In addition to concert performances, Northern Accord offers master classes on its individual instruments (including accompanying) or chamber music.



Ms. Gunlogson can be heard on an upcoming release by the Naxos classical label of Gian Carlo Menotti's Amahl and The Night Visitors and Ravel's L'Enfant et les Sortileges recorded with The Nashville Symphony under the baton of Alastair Willis.
