Dr. Joelle L. Lien

Associate Professor, Music Education Division
Joelle Lien teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music education and advises masters and doctoral student research. Prior to her appointment as Assistant Dean, she served as Chair of the Music Education Division and as Associate Director for Graduate Studies at the School of Music. She taught as an Faculty Associate in the School of Music at Arizona State University before coming to the University of Utah, and taught for the six years prior as director of a comprehensive band program in the Eureka Public Schools in South Dakota. She holds Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees from Arizona State University and a Bachelor of Music Education from South Dakota State University.
Dr. Lien’s involvement in interdisciplinary education and arts integration includes past service as a clinician in the Arts in Education Program at the University of South Alabama and faculty mentor for ArtsBridge projects in Utah elementary schools. She is currently a Professional Development Partner for three schools in the Utah State Legislature’s Beverley T. Sorenson Arts Learning Program. She is an active member of MENC: The National Association for Music Education and recently served as the Utah Music Educators Association Vice President for Higher Education. She is also a member of the Society for Ethics Across the Curriculum and is active in the Society for Music Teacher Education as a member of the Professional Development ASPA (Area for Strategic Planning and Action).
In addition to publications in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Contributions to Music Education, and the Music Educators Journal, Dr. Lien has presented her research at state, national, and international conferences. She is on the editorial board of Visions of Research in Music Education and serves regularly as an adjudicator of high school and middle school music festivals. Dr. Lien is well-known for her work in descriptive ethics and professionalism in music education.
