Lisa Byrnes currently plays Assistant Principal Flute with the Utah Symphony. Ms. Byrnes, a native of Northern California, attended the Eastman School of Music and graduated with degrees from the Curtis Institute of Music and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Her primary teachers were Julius Baker, Jefferey Khaner and Timothy Day. Ms. Byrnes played with the New World Symphony for three years under the direction of Michael Tilson-Thomas. Lisa was a first place winner of the New York Flute Club Competition. She has performed in several music festivals including Tanglewood, the National Repertory Orchestra, the International Music Festival at Evian, France, the Edinburgh International Festival, the Chatauqua Music Festival, the Lake Tahoe Music Festival and the Bear Valley Music Festival. She has appeared as a concerto soloist performing works by Mozart, Bach, Vivaldi, Ibert, Nielsen, Dubois, Rivier and Bloch. Most recently, she appeared as soloist with the Utah Symphony performing the Bach Suite in B Minor. Lisa completed tours to Japan, South America, France and Great Britain while playing with the New World Symphony, and she also travelled extensively throughout Europe with tours of "West Side Story" and "My Fair Lady". Prior to playing with the Utah Symphony, Lisa played Principal Flute with the Sarasota Opera Company and the San Francisco Opera's Western Opera Theatre, touring throughout the United States. Lisa has been on the faculty of the Sequoia Chamber Music Workshop at Humboldt State University since 1994 and served on the faculty of the Northern California Flute Camp in July 2008. She also serves on the faculty of the University of Utah, and for the 2007-08 school year, the School of Music at Brigham Young University. She has enjoyed an active chamber music life performing with groups such as The Left Coast Ensemble, Alternate Currents, Nova, Intermezzo and Three Fish and a Scorpion.
