Music Education Senior Recitals

General Information

The music education recital must be passed prior to student teaching.

The recital must be performed during a semester in which the student is enrolled in applied lessons, and it is recommended that the recital be performed during the sixth semester of private study.

Music education recitals will be scheduled on selected afternoons during the fall and spring semesters.

Students also have the option of scheduling evening or weekend recitals (with the permission of their private applied teacher and the chair of the music education division). Students are not obligated to perform outside of the times designated for music education recitals, nor are they required to perform a program longer than 30 minutes.

It is the student's responsibility sign up for a standard “music education” afternoon recital time, or to make arrangements (with School of Music staff per degree recital policies) for an evening or weekend recital.

Program (for afternoon music education recitals)

All recital program information must be submitted electronically to Chris Smith and as a hard copy to the music education division chair no later than two weeks prior to the recital date.

Failure to submit program information by the deadline may result in the cancellation of the student's recital.

1. student's full name

2. student's instrument/voice

3. student's accompanist(s) and instrument(s)

4. student's private applied teacher's name

Content

For afternoon music education recitals, the recital is to consist of musical material sufficient for, but not to exceed, a 30-minute performance.

For evening recitals, students have two options. The first option is that students may perform a recital consisting of musical material sufficient for, but not to exceed, a 60-minute performance. The second option is that students may perform a recital consisting of musical material sufficient for, but not to exceed, a 30-minute performance provided that they share an evening recital program with another student who also performs a 30-minute program.

The material should allow the student the opportunity to:

demonstrate musicality and musicianship,

demonstrate technical proficiency in the performance medium,

demonstrate a command over a breadth of representative repertoire.

The material should be of difficulty appropriate to the level of the student and consistent with the 3000 level of instruction.

Specific program content will be at the discretion of the student’s private applied teacher.

The recital should include all presentation aspects expected of a formal recital, including the following:

Proper dress for a formal performance

Appropriate concert deportment and performance etiquette, including acknowledgement of the audience and acknowledgement of the accompanist and other collaborative musicians.
